In the tradition of opening a door on an Advent calendar, we open today’s post to reveal…
… there’s 1 day to Christmas Day…
and today’s spice is…
… Nutmeg
A pinch of spice
Nutmeg is the classic spice to sprinkle on top of a Christmas eggnog or hot chocolate. Nutmeg is used in a variety of traditional Christmas dishes and baking such as Christmas puddings or gingerbread cookies. A pinch of nutmeg enhances the flavours of nuts and fruits and other spices. The flavour of nutmeg is sweet, spicy, warm, and intense so a little pinch of nutmeg goes a long way.
A pinch of the Christmas story
As the shepherds returned to their sheep, they were praising God and saying wonderful things about him. Everything they had seen and heard was just as the angel had said.
Luke 2:20 (CEV)
A pinch of reflection
It’s Christmas Eve. Today is our last Advent reflection. We’ve travelled through Advent together even though we’re in different parts of the world. Each day has included revealing a pinch of spice and reflecting on the first Christmas story. Like the smallest pinch of spice, our faith enhances all the good gifts God has given to us. We don’t need to have much faith at all to be a follower of Jesus – all we need is a pinch. We’ve prepared during this Advent by sampling small pinches of herbs and spices, each giving us little insights and pinches of understanding. Today we take some time to reflect on what we’ve seen and heard, smelled and tasted over these last twenty-nine days. We offer our praise and say wonderful things about God. We ponder what we have learned from this journey. What will we carry with us into the days, months, and years ahead as we return to our regular routines after the holiday season?
